Where Steve is From

Steve Talkington is a native Texan and has lived most of his life in the Texas Panhandle, South Plains or Central Texas.

​

Steve’s Personal Life

Steve is married to his wife Sheree for 37 years and has one son who is currently in college.  In his spare time Steve enjoys traveling, playing golf, hunting, fishing, and riding his horses.

Steve’s Work Experience

Steve worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for 31 years retiring in 2011. During his time with Texas DPS Steve was assigned to the Texas Highway Patrol for 13 years, the License and Weight Service (CVE) for 4 years and then promoted to the Criminal Investigations Division for the last 15 years of his career before retiring from the DPS.

Steve’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Experience.

While in the License and Weight Service Steve was a compliance review officer and was trained by the US Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (US DOT FMCSA) in Oklahoma City, OK to conduct compliance reviews. As a state partner of the FMCSA with the Texas DPS Steve conducted compliance reviews, both interstate and intrastate carriers, for hire and private motor carriers. Steve’s time in the License and Weight Service was spent enforcing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) through roadside inspections using the North American Standard Inspection criteria.

The Idea of Assisting Companies Become Compliant.

Steve formed his company Steve Talkington Consulting to help companies become compliant with or stay compliant with the FMCSR. Steve enjoys teaching others and got that love of teaching while instructing classes at Texas DPS. Steve teaches DOT Compliance seminars and assists companies on a one-time or reoccurring basis. We have customers we have visited once, and some we see monthly, quarterly, or as needed. Since October 2011 we have been assisting companies on site. In 2016, we expanded to include compliance seminars in a classroom setting. We designed these seminars to train you on how to become US DOT compliant and stay compliant.  These seminars are perfect for safety personnel, owners, driver managers, reporting and paperwork personnel, human resources personnel, managers, maintenance personnel, dispatchers, and anyone that has a part in a company’s compliance.

Gaining Experience

We have seen all sides of the DOT compliance equation. We have worked enforcing the DOT regulations on commercial motor vehicles roadside and have conducted compliance reviews. We have the added experience of helping customers build their compliance program by assisting them to be compliant. We know what companies face on a day to day basis, for hire and private carriers alike. We also assist companies obtain a satisfactory rating after a compliance review that had a conditional or unsatisfactory rating.
